One Day at a Time

Slice of Life Story Challenge
Slice 1 of 31

As life goes, there are always things to be thankful for and celebrate especially one day at a time!  For this Saturday, I am especially grateful...after a ten day hospital stay and a month of rehab at the nursing home, my mom got her wish and went home.  I am so glad she's home for so many reasons but most of all I think my dad needed her company.

When she entered the hospital back in January, the whole family was scared!  We all worried that the diverticulitis flare up would lead us down the road to surgery.  Thankfully, her condition was different this time around and the doctors treated her with IV antibiotics and the problem took care of itself.

There are still other problems looming as many people who worked with her noticed her memory issues. One of the doctors she worked with also diagnosed her with dementia.  In the near future, we are taking her to a geriatrician to get more specifics on what stage she's in and things we all need to do to help my dad as he deals with her needs on a regular basis...

So while I am happy that she's home, I worry about the journey ahead of us.  I don't know what the future holds, but I will try my best to enjoy all of her-

time.

I hope to write every day for the Slice of Life Challenge.  Thank you to the Two Writing Teachers for hosting this challenge.  Hope you join in the learning and grow as a writer.

  1. One day at a time is the best approach. Worrying too much never helps. I am glad your mom is back home. I hope that you will get the best advice and support from the specialist to be able to help her.

  2. So glad to hear your mom is better and at home! I know that the future will not always be easy, but just as we write a slice every day, we take what life brings us one day at a time. God's grace amazes me all the time. I look forward reading your posts this month!

  3. So glad to hear your mom is doing better but I know it isn't easy. As I like to say, growing old is for the strong. It is hard work! I hope you find the specialists that will help you understand her strengths and the inspiration to keep on loving and living every moment of every day.

  4. I'm delighted to hear that she's home. I was just thinking about you (and her) yesterday... wondering how everything was going. I figured I'd find out today OR I'd email you today if you didn't jump into slicing this year. But here you are. Yea!

  5. I'm thrilled that your mom is home - especially for your dad's sake. Having had many family members deal with dementia over the years, I would say that the one day at a time philosophy is your best choice. Enjoy every moment.

  7. First I am glad she is home. Today there are many resources to help as you travel that path. I wish I had done a better job of keeping a journal. At the time it was just so raw.

  9. Amy I have taken wisdom from what you are going through with your Mom. That is to enjoy what you have and take things as they come one day at a time. This is a hard road and I will add a prayer for the journey. Blessings.

  10. You are so, so right - one day at a time is all we can manage. When my parents were ill I realized how important that being fully in that one day was - for them and for me. I hope things go well with your mother, and with you. As always, I look forward to reading your writing.

  12. I so enjoyed meeting you in November at our slicer's breakfast during NCTE. Glad to hear your Mom is home. I will keep her health in my thoughts and prayers. One day at a time sounds like the best approach. These are the hard times ... I keep thinking that as I hold on to and enjoy moments with my own parents. You encourage me with your story and sharing. Thank you.

  14. Hi Amy! I'm sorry to hear about your mom's struggles and I hope the doctors will be able to help you find the answers you need. I love the title of this post, One Day at a Time. It's all we can do, isn't it? I'll be keeping your family in my prayers. I'm going to be in Brimfield over spring break. Maybe we can connect.

  15. Amy,
I'm glad to hear your mom has returned home. I'm sure the time in the hospital and in rehab was hard for everyone. Thankfully when the journey gets difficult there are so many who come along to help us.
