Ocean's Treasure Not for Me

Day 2 of National Poetry Month

Post inspired by Bud the Teacher's Picture Prompt

Ocean's Treasure Not for Me

Bringing new treasure every minute

Looking carefully

to see what's in it

Using the waves to bring it to shore

Gazing endlessly

what beach walking is for

Washing and tumbling with the sand

picking through

sorting out on the hand

Dropping back down and washing out

"Treasure no more!"

crashing waves shout.

Taking trash back, out to sea

discarding away...

No treasure for me!

As I thought of this poem, I reflected back on the days when I was a child walking on the beach.  I always hunted for the perfect shell-like the ones I'd see in the stores-never to find such treasure.  Seeking perfection always-never satisfied...letting it go

Mother Nature's April Fool

Spring is Mother Nature's April Fool!

Looking, pining, begging, and cheering to see her step onto the Northern Hemisphere's stage!
Yearning to see
...rays of sun streaming down to warm us
Longing to feel
...breezes swaying the blades of grass
Waiting to smell
...scents of blooming flowers
Reaching to touch
...what is merely a figment of our imagination for now
Desiring to taste
...products of her early works of wonder
Please step forward, come out of the fog and end these cameo only appearances!
Stop playing Mother Nature's April Fool!

Inspired by Bud Hunt's National Poetry Month picture prompt of the day!

Poetic Voice on the Blogs!

This past week, I experienced a very powerful blogging session with 5th Graders from one of my schools...as a matter of fact, the one that's being closed...

As a culminating activity to National Poetry Month, we used poetry as our form for writing...and we focused on voice! We used Michelle @ Literacy Learning Zone's poem Voices from the Lost and Found as a mentor text...we talked about how the author gave voice to the items in the lost and found, the feelings they have, etc. We connected it with how the students had previously written from the voice of one of the animals Mr. Leo brought to the building to show the kids...Anna and I both shared our poems we wrote, dog and cat...here are our examples:

It's a Dawg's World
By Anna Panning

When I woke up this morning I needed to stretch.

That didn’t happen, I had to play “go fetch”.

The day got better when I started to eat,

Just food from a box? That’s not a treat.

I needed to get a brush because my coat was all nappy.

When I was done getting brushed I was very happy.

My mood was all snappy so I started to bark

I just saw my friend cat and she gives me a spark!

From me, the Cat
by Amy Rudd

I am the small and lazy cat
sometimes sassy and a brat!

I have a friend whose name is Dawg
sometimes we like to go for a jog!

I like to do things with my friend,
I hope that we stay friends to the end!

We decided to start our own little gang
Just she and I, we like to hang

Dawg, I’ll just curl up on your lap
I am sleepy now, I need…a  n—a—p—zzzzzzz!

We all wrote one together, "Tiki" (not with the morning class, but with the afternoon class...we shouldn't have skipped this step...modeling is such a critical part of the process...)
After this, we turned them loose on their blogs and asked them to compose their poems! I am so proud of ideas they thought of writing from the perspective of: a closing building, glue sticks, chairs, a desk, the roadway, sidewalk, basketball, football, heat, socks, Cheese, Surfboard, pop tart, lion's food, Cake, tv, and test (just to mention a few)...we still have some editing work to be done but I think we could definitely combine them into a book!

We really challenged them with this and they rose to the occasion! Way to go fifth graders! I am so proud of you! A big thanks to Anna for taking the leap with me and seeing this through and a big thanks to Michelle for the mentor text that inspired this work!

KEYS, PLEASE!

KEYS, PLEASE!
Please!
I need those keys!
I know I held those keys
Right here in my hand!
Now I can’t see where they are...
Could I have laid them on this stand?
I wonder if I knocked them off into the boxes I packed?
Do I really need dig back through
now that they are all stacked?
I guess there is no choice
I wish the keys had a voice!
I need those keys…
Please!

Nature's Candles-Tulips!

Nature's Candles

Breathing deeply, taking you in,
Admiring your beautiful hues
Reminded of your celebration!

Celebrating Spring's arrival
Petals bursting forth
as flickering flames

Celebrating warmer days
drenched in the rays of the sun
sharing your life with us

Celebrating warm rains
the plip-plop of the drops
giving you a refreshing drink

A celebration, a feast for our eyes
the brilliant show of beauty
knowing nature's candles!

**As I was driving my son to school this a.m.  I noticed a bunch of tulips in front of  a little group of shops-I was so taken by the beauty of them, that it inspired this poem and I almost missed the turn off to his school because I was so deep in thought about them...He blurted, "Mommy why are you going past my school?"  I came to and made the turn just in time...

I kept thinking about the tulips all day-finally had time to write to this inspiration...

Napkin Notes

Napkin Notes

Visiting with a good friend

Chatting it up to the end

Some notes I need to write

Not one speck of paper in sight?

Ah, here’s what I need,

A napkin indeed!

Ballpoint pen in my hand-

Jotting notes and

in my pocket

it goes!

The Family's Day Together

Tuesday's Slice

The Family's Day Together

Family of four, together, happy as can be!
Making plans at first, deciding, how to spend our day,
Watching our children, seeing what they see!

Investigating, narrowing choices, wondering free or fee?
Certain we're leaving soon, almost on our way...
Family of four together! Happy as can be!

Making a final choice, going to see ChuckE,
Wondering with excitement! which silly games we'd play...
Watching our children, seeing what they see!

Driving then arriving, the "Cheddar Rat" we see!
Ordering pizza, wings, and salad now it's time to pay-
Family of four together happy as can be!

Dropping tokens in, winning tickets...one, two, three!
Knowing they were spending fast, how long would we stay?
Watching our children, seeing what they see!

Placing tickets in the pockets, trading for prizes with glee!
Smiling kids, sweet little faces, what a fabulous day!
Family of four together happy as can be!
Watching our children, seeing what they see!

**Dedicated to our children Kam and Nat, written after our journey to the "Cheddar Rat" also known as ChuckE Cheese!
**First try at the Villanelle?  Wow, it was a toughie...I wanted to tell the story of our day from start to finish...It was hard to choose wisely and get it all in...We had an excellent adventure!

Pocket Items Gallery

Pocket Items Gallery

Deep inside the jacket pockets
are trinkets and treasures galore!

Little girl just won't give up
digging until there's no more!

She's finally reached the end,
the pockets are all emptied!

She's spread them out for all to view
now a gallery on the floor!

Daddy's Fishing Vest

Daddy’s Fishing Vest

Look at all those pockets there!

What about the pockets my dear?

What do you put inside them?

It’s all about the fishing needs…

What does the fisherman need today?

License to fish, needed for permission!

Why do you need permission, daddy?

Follow the rules of the sport!

What do you catch with cameras?

Stories or not, one getting away…

Why would it get away, daddy?

Fish just like to be difficult…

What else is in the pockets?

Bobbers, lures, lines, leaders, hooks, weights…

          Waits?

No, weights and snacks for waits

Long waits or short waits today?

You just relax and be patient…

Ok, Daddy, I’ll wait with you,

Let’s hook some fish together today!

Me and you, you and me?

Me and you!  You and me!

Mommy's? Back Pockets

Standing in line!
Hayride to come!
Boy so excited!

Standing in line!
Hayride to come!
Boy getting distracted...

Standing in line?
Hayride to come?
Boy getting bored!

Standing in line?
Hayride to come?
Boy begins whining!

Standing in line?
Hayride to come?
Boy grabbing pockets!

Standing in line!
Hayride to come?
Mommy NOT mine!?!

Standing in line...
Hayride has come,
Boy crying, embarrassed!

Tiny Bib Pocket

And so begins National Poetry Month!

Tiny Bib Pocket

Peak in the bib pocket, what can we see?

1 tiny little hand reaches in with glee!

Some tiny fingers search for a wish...

Discover the treasure! Some tiny Gold-fish!

The treasure found, the hunt comes to an end,

Unless the Gold drops down in here again!

The tiny bib pocket
